Sump pump gfci tripping

Unofficially, there are sometimes problems with sump pumps on GFCI circuits. I was puzzled why the GFCI would trip and wondered if the pump running continuously would do that. If so, what kind is recommended?

GFCI stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter, which . My Brother-in-Law is getting upset because every time he plugs in his manual sump pump to remove pool cover water, it instantly trips his gfci outlet.

Problem is, our sump pump has frequently tripped the GFCI in the past and flooded the basement.

Sump pumps commonly are required to have GFCI protection, either at the wall outlet they plug into or on the circuit breaker itself.

Our basement flooded with about of water in the unfinished area (concrete) and most of the carpeted area wet. Turned out the breaker on the sump pump outlet had tripped and caused it to stop. Once water has seeped through the seals and gets into the motor, the GFI will trip and shut-off the electricity.

GFCI -outlets – thesumppumpcompany. Great for protecting people, but not so great at protecting your home when the GFCI outlet trips off for no good reason. Many local codes require GFCI outlets in basement mechanical areas, while some prohibit GFCI outlets for sump pumps. The sump pump was not working, the GFCI was tripped , so power was lost.

Discharge pipe is leaking, Inspect discharge pipe and joints for any place where water can leave the pipe and go back into the sump pit. If the GFCI breaker trips , the alarm will soun and the homeowners will know they have to reset the breaker. A lot of good GFCI , but nothing ( except Tester1backup sump) addresses sump pump failure. GFCI protected , protection is not required on those serving refrigerators, freezers, or sump pumps.

In summary, where fear of negative effects of accidental trip of GFCI circuit would outweigh benefits of this protection. Someone mentioned it already, refrigerators are inductive loads, meaning current is being absorbed and generated out of phase with the AC current. Sewer pump should be hooked up to GFCI.

The reason this will help you is first it is code in some places and second if the pump is the culprit then it will pop the GFCI outlet. Some sewer pumps are rated for amps . Then you might develop sump pump problems. The list below will help you diagnose your sump . The customer told me that his brother-in-law swore by Zoeller sump pumps , and insisted that was the only manufacturer he should ever consider for his sump pump . Also, this unit keeps tripping the GFI.

Pros: Durable, Easy To Use, Quiet, Reliable. Don Recommends This Liberty Pumps Product. A clogged impeller can also cause the sump pump to trip or low water level(dry running) which would draw more current, heat up the pump, trigger the thermal overload . Generally, equipment such as refrigerators, freezers and sump pumps that cannot go without electrical power for an extended period of time without causing costly losses or property damage should not be placed on a .
