How to connect a light to a switch

Why do some people use the holes in the back of the switch to make the connection ? My understanding is that its dangerous to connect that way because the connection may become loose. If its that dangerous why are the light switches made with the option of using the holes and why are they allowed on . HomeChannel Installing switch -c.
