Wire hanging light fixture

The two lamp cord wires on many hanging light fixtures are hard to tell apart. Gary Clark walks you through this easy installation. Learn how to connect light fixture wires correctly and with as little danger as possible in this free video.

Check the supply wires for fraying or damage.

If necessary, cut the wires and strip off about 3⁄4-inch of insulation.

Twist the bare end of the black supply wire together with the bare end of . A hanging light will have two wires coming from the fixture. On an alternating current circuit, one wire will be the hot wire and one will be the neutral wire. However, depending on the type of hanging lamp it is, the wires may not be readily marked. Wrap the bare section of each fixture wire to the bare section of its corresponding installed wire , and screw on the wire connectors.

Bend all the wires down and out of the junction box so you can work with them, and hang the end chain link onto the collar loop. Some junction boxes contain wiring from multiple circuits. So even if you cut the power to the light fixture , there may still be live wires in the junction box.
