Circuits with lamps in them are wired in . If the wires were loosely connecte electric arcing may have generated enough heat to melt the plastic casing of the switch. Make sure your voltage tester is working before you test the switch.

Includes single pole, 3-way, and 4-way switches. This article explains how to test circuit wires for power at outlets, switches , and light fixtures, using one of several tools. Switches to appliances function by opening and closing the electrical circuit flowing through the device to provide it with power. For example, light switches allow current to flow through the wires and the bulb, lighting up the bulb. This contact allows additional current to flow through your circuit and overload your breaker.

Check each wire to ensure there is no contact. A multimeter is an instrument used to check for AC or DC voltages, resistance and continuity of electrical components, and small amounts of current in circuits. It is equally important to have the test leads connected to the proper jacks as it is to have the selector switch range and test type (volts, amps, ohms) set.
