Plug blue and brown wire

The fuse breaks the circuit if too much current flows. This should grip the cable itself, and not the individual wires inside it. The blue neutral wire goes to the left, the brown live wire to the right.

Make sure the electrical cord is firmly gripped by the arrestor clips. The green and yellow wire must always be inserted into the top pin.

Fixing the flex in to the plug using the cable clamp Now loosen the cable clamp on the plug (by undoing the two retaining screws on the bottom of the plug ) then feed in the flex.

Twist the flex so that the neutral wire ( blue ) is to the left, the live ( brown ) is to the right.

Tighten the cable clamp so the flex is held . In principle any other colors except these may be used for the power conductors. The colors adopted as local practice are shown in Table below. UK plugs use brown insulation for the live wire , blue insulation for the neutral wire and green with yellow stripes insulation for the earth wire. But why this particular combination of colours?

The answer is deceptively simple: there is no type of colour blindness that will result in these wires becoming confused . How have wiring colours changed in the UK? The neutral black has been replaced by blue. The line red and has been replaced by brown. The earth is still identified by green and yellow.

Find out how to stay safe when using electricity in the different areas of your home, what the safety features of your electrical installation are and how they work. Live : The brown wire goes to the live terminal, which is on the right of the plug. Neutral : The blue wire connects to the neutral terminal on the left of the . The blue (neutral) wire is always to the left, the brown (live) wire is always to the right, and the yellow and green (earth cable) is always through the centre and up to the top. Again, though, please allow us to stress that you should . Earth : This is where the green and yellow wire goes - however, double insulated appliances do not have an earth wire. Once you have cut the cables to the right . What Have Wire Colours Changed to?

The flex that fits into and connects the plug electrically will usually have three insulated wires (conductors). All three are further insulated by what is known as the sheath, which is the outer plastic cover. So you leave out the green right? And the blue and brown can then go either way?

They can usually be pushed completely out of the plug. The connectors should also be marked - they may have the words Live, Neutral and Earth (or just the letters L, N and E) or have brown , blue and green coloured markings.
